The Federal Government’s ambitious project, the ₦15 trillion Lagos-Calabar coastal road, has stirred controversy and criticism from various quarters, notably including the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi. Obi deemed the project a misplaced priority, echoing sentiments shared by many Nigerians.

The House of Representatives responded to mounting concerns by passing a resolution to scrutinize the procurement process behind the contract award. Honourable Austin Achado spearheaded the motion, highlighting potential violations of the 2007 procurement act and the absence of requisite approvals from the National Assembly.

This initiative underscored the legislature’s commitment to upholding transparency and accountability in government projects. The urgency of the matter prompted swift action, signaling a concerted effort to address public apprehensions surrounding the colossal undertaking.

Minister of Works Dave Umahi’s recent revelation regarding the project’s cost further fueled the debate. With an estimated expenditure of N4 billion per kilometer, the proposed 700 km coastal road raised eyebrows, prompting skepticism and skepticism about its feasibility and financial prudence.

The road’s intended trajectory, spanning from Lagos to Cross River through several states, underscores its significance as a potential lifeline for transportation and economic development.
